I am not walking around in a burqa: Sonakshi Sinha

While Sonakshi Sinha is sticking to the principles which come with her surname, she says that it doesn’t mean that she’s too rigid

Of all that’s keeping Bollywood actresses in vogue, item numbers seem to
be the flavour of the season, and joining the long list is Sonakshi
Sinha. The actress shot a special dahi handi number for Akshay Kumar’s
upcoming film “OMG Oh My God!” this weekend, and DT has exclusive
pictures of the filming. Choreographed by Prabhudheva, the number “Go
Govinda” features Sonakshi and him dancing to this Himesh Reshammiya
song. Dressed in denims and a short white top, an outfit chosen by her
fans through a contest on timesofindia.indiatimes.com,
the actress chatted with us about dancing with Prabhu, even as he told
us, “Sonakshi is a superb dancer and has her own distinct style. This is
her third film, and look at her perform.By her tenth film, she’ll be in a
 league of her own."

Excerpts from an interview:

Why is every actress – you included –doing an item number these days? What’s the catch?
Every song is also being called an item number irrespective of what it is, but this is a special Gokulashtami song. Having Prabhudheva in the same frame as me was the biggest catch; plus Akshay asked me to do it. He made me hear it and I immediately started dancing to it, so I knew it was a good one… I’ve been approached before for similar appearances and I’ve not done it because it has to be something which really clicks with me. I wouldn’t do it just for the heck of it.

You’ve just finished “Son Of Sardaar”, your father’s been unwell, you’re shooting for “Dabangg 2” and will soon start “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2”. How do you take out personal time and space from within such a packed schedule?
When I pack up, I go home and be with friends and family – that’s my unwinding space. But I don’t like to go home and discuss work except for the obvious – momma will ask me how my day was – but other than that, nothing. I like to switch off as soon as they scream ‘pack up’. In reality, I switch on and switch off with the camera only. Once I am home, I am a family person.

You have the image of a family-oriented girl who doesn’t cross certain boundaries, and it seems to have worked for you. Weren’t you worried that the industry may not accept an actress who has such restrictions?
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not difficult to be a desi girl. I don’t have any dearth of films coming my way. And the work I’m doing doesn’t require me to do any of that. I have certain principles which I’m going by, and none of my producers or directors have any complaints. “Dabangg” opened up a lot of avenues for me. People ask me about my desi avatar and if it’s risky. And I always ask them if they know of any newcomer who has signed six films after their debut.

Never felt the need to loosen up a bit or be a little less rigid about these principles?
They’re very proud I follow it like this. But I’m not that rigid. I’m not walking around in a burqa. I’m doing what I am required to do.

Despite being so, you’re invariably linked up ever so often. How do your parents react to that?
My parents have been here long enough to know what’s true and what isn’t. They know me well enough to understand that I’d never hide such things from them. And anyway, if an actress is single, she has to be linked up. So it’s fine by me and it’s fine by them. They know the truth.

But why is Sonakshi single?
I wish I had the time for love. I have been working round the clock and my goals are very different right now. But most importantly, I am happy. I like coming on the sets every day, meeting new people, dancing, singing… Basically just doing things I enjoy. When love has to happen, it will.

Then why’re you keeping charming men at bay, like you said in a recent interview? Not even open to casual dating?
I don’t believe in casual dating. When I find the one, I’ll see how I balance my personal and professional commitments. Right now, there’s no time for it.

When you debuted with “Dabangg”, much was said about Salman choosing you over Narmmadaa Ahuja. Why didn’t you ever give your perspective on it?
I wasn’t even aware of all of that when things like that were said. I’ve been brought up in a family which believes that when people say bad things about you, it’s a very good sign. That is what my parents told me even then. If only good is written about you, people get bored. People like spice, gossip, etc, and it’s always better to be written about than not. So,I follow that.

“OMG Oh My God!” is being co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Grazing Goat Productions.
